What is a young male chicken called?

A young male chicken is called a cockerel or a rooster. Cockerels typically have more vibrant plumage, longer and more prominent wattles and combs, and larger spurs on their legs compared to young female chickens (called pullets). They also develop larger, more pronounced crowing behaviors as they mature. Cockerels play a role in a flock by protecting the hens, mating with them for reproduction, and acting as a leader or protector of the group. They are also known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behavior, especially towards other males.
